It had to happen at some point, I suppose. I got back from a bank holiday break on Tuesday to find the place I’m staying had been entered in my absence.
The yale lock had been done. It felt looser when I slotted my key into it.
Inside nothing seemed out of place, then I looked in my PDA… the 256mb SD card had been taken from it.
Then I looked around for a 1gb USB memory stick with my files on it. That too had gone from where I’d left it on the desk as well.
On top of that I’m still unable to update the website after 2 weeks due to some reason my ISP cannot explain.
So I’ll be sticking things on this blog for the time being. Surely they can’t nobble the all conquering Google (I hope)
P.S Stelious, you are totally correct about mildly aggrieved from North London.
Dined with bigwigs and all…
the aforementioned’s MBE awaits.
Sorry to hear about this crime. Have you reported it to the Police ?
Presumably you will be treating this as more than just a theft of equipment.
Has any confidential material been compromised ?
Not having read your book yet, I am not sure about the strength of your claims regarding the bomb you witnessed.
However, you should not be spied on by Government or private sector snoopers, simply for your attempts to get at the truth.
If you do not do so already, you might want to think about using some encryption on any replacement devices e.g. True Crypt, which can be used on USB devices as well, and which allows for multiple, hidden encrypted volumes to be nested within one another, with different pass phrases, for plausible deniability.
It is very worrying that we should even have to contemplate using techniques which political dissidents living under repressive dictatorships need to resort to, but here are a couple of links which offer some practical suggestions about computer and mobile phone security for whistleblowers, confidential sources, activists, journalists and bloggers:

Hang in there fella – good blog. Don’t get paranoid get even.
Peace
Trying to gain sympathy and sales by deception, eh?
You’re one brave fella.
Taking on a whole organization.
I would pay good money if that’s what it took to become as brave as you.
Thanks for keeping us informed.
keep at it.
if google where compromised, you wouldn’t be reading this blog.
google own blogger and could close this account in a second.
if google are compromised, it’s news to me. i’d be living in a gutter, park bench, doing factory work perhaps.
i’m not, i earn a good living from the internet.
web people are different.
i heard tim berners lee talking at the www conference 2006 in edinburgh, the inventor of the internet at Cern Switzerland.
these people have no interest in controling the internet because of the VIEWS of one group of people, or governments, alternative stuff like this only serves to enrich the internet and make it the force for good it is today.
keep up the good work.
Daniel,
I think you are extremely brave to be doing this. I admire you enourmously. The world needs more people like you, who can throw spanners in the works, and who can back their claims up with FACTS. I think you may have an inkling of what you will be up against with the latest shenanigans. I don’t want to put a downer on it, nor do I want to teach my granny to suck eggs, as I’m sure you know exactly what you are doing, and have plans for all eventualities; but I really think you need to be thinking more alomg the lines of protecting both yourself and all of the knowledge contained therein. Far-fetched it may sound, but you are now “in the sights”. I would consider a little holiday, perhaps.
Oh, and Google? Forget it, brother. They are _not_ in any sense of the word, secure. Not any more.
Keep it up. You are doing the UK a great service
